View from Chimney Rock
This is the view from the top of Chimney Rock.
At the far left distance is a view of Chaco Canyon about 90 miles away. If you look along the walls of the ruins towards the nearest hill you will be looking directly at the hole that was cut into the bare rock outcropping. Behind you is Chimney Rock. Also note the piramid shaped rock in the near distance to the left. This rock, back to this Kiva, and over to Peterson ridge ruins is a perfect equalateral triangle!
This view is of Peterson Ranch which is to the northwest of the kiva. There are ruins on top of this ridge that have not been excavated as the access is blocked by private land and they want to wait for money and better techniques before they work on them.
This view is a telephoto shot of Chaco Canyon in the distance. Line of sight was important to them as they built the outer communities. Not sure, but it would appear to be for communication.
This view of the upper Kiva will show some of the detail. Please note the square hole on the floor. This is connected to the chimney you see on the far side of the kiva walls by a tunnel. It could not be for fires as they used the hole in the roof for that. Was it an entrance for the ancestors to enter the Kiva???

Thanks for the trip to the mountains it is absolutely beautiful, as Jeri and Dena said "Thanks for the history lessons" too. There are interesting things and history everywhere we go - we just need to take time and grasp it like you and Barbara do.
NEAT! NEAT! NEAT!
